The Great Pacific Garbage Patch and the Danger Lurking in Plastic Waste

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a collection of marine debris trapped in a vortex of the North Pacific Ocean. There are two protocols carried out by swimmers, namely visual surveys and attaching the GPS buoys.
  1. Visual Survey - A survey of all marine debris that they see from the vessel. If they find an object large enough, they will collect that debris and take pictures for researches to track back the origin of that debris.
  2. Attach GPS Buoy - By attaching GPS buoy onto marine debris, they can know the movement of trash in the ocean.
There is a shoe brand, Adidas, which uses plastic waste to make sneakers. They start collecting trashes from the beach and sort them to send it to an Adidas processing plant. The processing plant that includes crushing, washing, and dehydrating the waste will leave small plastic flakes. The flakes are heated, dried, and cooled, then cut into small resin pellets to create a filament, a form of polyester yarn.

Plastic Waste

What is the Danger Lurking of Plastic Waste?

Plastic waste impact all the creatures and environment in the world, especially marine life and human lives. Plastics waste predicted will outweigh all the fish by 2050. Many animals starve with stomachs full of trash and plastics. There are 90% of sea birds have eaten plastics, also founded a dead whale ate 32 kg of plastics. Who actually realizes that plastics in the ocean could be exposed to UV radiation and make microplastics? Microplastics, the smaller pieces of plastic might rotate in the sea eternally. When the microplastics start to crumble into smaller pieces, they will be easily swallowed by all kinds of marine life. The dangerous thing is, we may consume sea creatures (fishes, squids, etc.) who have swallow microplastics.

Besides marine life, plastics also impact drylands, especially when they are in a garbage dump. Rainwater flows through the waste and absorbs the water-soluble compounds it contains, and some of those are highly toxic. Together, they create a stew call leachate that moves into groundwater, soils, and streams that poison ecosystem and harm the wildlife.

Flood Prevention and Control

Flood in Manado

At this time, pollution, disasters, and diseases have covered the world to a maximum range. Without knowing it, human beings harm the ecosystem and continuously cause this chaos. We have forgotten that we serve a responsibility to heart by keeping it safe and protecting its environment. Many people nowadays couldn't maintain the use of plastics and trash. We throw our waste wherever we want, don't reduce water waste and many other causes. How can this action bring us to a healthy world? This action leads us to certain natural disasters, of which is the flood.

Floods continuously happen in Indonesia every year, which brings an impact on our environment. Floods are the most common natural disaster in Indonesia. Failing to evacuate flooded areas or entering floodwaters can lead to injury or death. Here are some actions you can do when a flood happens.

1.      Please don’t panic.

2.      Evacuate to a higher place.

3.      Monitor weather developments.

4.      Save your important belongings.

5.      Turn off electricity in your house.

6.      Take refuge in a safer place.

7.     Always be careful.

But again, it will be better if we can prevent floods by applying these steps.

1.   Throw garbage in its place.

Every waste that you throw in certain places like roads, drains, rivers, and oceans can cause a flood. Even little waste will be piling up until it clogs channels and the process of absorption of rainwater. If you don’t find any trash bin to throw your trash, please keep it until you find garbage.

2.   Plant trees and plants around the house.

The root of the plants can absorb water well, which can bring rainwater into the soil and keep it as groundwater reserves. Without the help of plants, the soil couldn’t absorb rainwater well, and there will be puddles on the surface of the soil.

3.   Make drains well.

If you could make drains well, then the rainwater will drain properly so that the flood couldn’t enter your house.

4.   Add water absorption areas.

Please let your house yard be covered by soil, not with concrete or asphalt. If impossible to make it completely on the ground, use paving so there is still room for water infiltration.

5.   Routinely clean the house drains.

By cleaning your house drains two times a week or month, there will be no pilling trashes that could cause a flood. Besides avoiding floods, this also can be helpful for the health of your environment from mosquitos and mouse nests that cause disease.

6.   Do not cut trees illegally.

The potential of a flood will increase as you cut trees often and illegally. Trees are helpful to absorb rainwater easily. Therefore, do not cut trees too often to avoid a flood.

7.   Do not build houses by the river.

Building a house by the river has many risks rather than making a house in the city. It can damage the environment because household waste is much easier to wash away in the river. Besides, this usually overcrowded environment can be a place for various diseases to develop from poor sanitation.

8.   Make biopore holes at home

Biopore is one of the effective ways to prevent a flood. Biopore is a hole made to support house cleanliness, water availability, clean household waste, and even help prevent flooding. But there are still many people who have not realized the benefits of making biopore holes at their houses. Biopore holes applied at home can include water holes, organic waste holes, and sewer holed. By applying this biopore hole at home, likely, floods will not hit your house, and your house will get the amount of good quality water during dry seasons, as well as compost from organic waste that can improve soil quality. If you want to have a better environment for your house, please check the video below to find out how to make bio-pore holes.

To protect our environment, of course, we can start with small steps, such as using eco-friendly products. An eco-friendly product that can be applied is to use a tote bag instead of using a single-use plastic bag. The interesting fact is, we can create our eco-friendly products and we can decorate them using artistic touches. We can see an example from this Mosaic Art Tote Bag. Uniquely, the materials to decorate this eco-friendly product are made from waste materials.

The waste materials used are easy to find around us, like the used plastic bags that we often use, empty glass bottles, sunflower hulls, and eggshells. Well, all this material will end up in the trash. Instead of wasting this advantage, we better use it wisely by making something useful.

~ Mosaic Art Tote Bag ~

This creative product is one of the eco-friendly products that can bring big impacts on society and the surrounding environment. This product is creative because we can see a touch of mosaic art and a unique base. This product is said to be unique because I used waste materials to become an element in mosaic art on a tote bag. Instead of wasting these wastes, it will be better if I recycle them into something completely beautiful.

This mosaic art tote bag is inspired by current environmental conditions. What's wrong with the environment today? The world environment, especially Indonesia today is very concerning. The large amount of plastic waste and waste that has piled up in roads, sewers, rivers, and even oceans harm ecosystem life. Therefore, this art tote bag mosaic product is part of the creative economy product because it is containing the elements of creativity, is based on information, and is part of the art goods market.

My goal of choosing to make this mosaic art tote bag is, with the hope that plastic will be reduced in our environment. Also, I use the art mosaic technique to attract attention for the public to buy this product. The impact of this product on society and the environment is that people can have the habit of using tote bags instead of plastic bags. Also, plastics and other waste materials can be minimized so that the world can be cleaner.

Indonesia's Creative Economy Challenges:

1. Creative Human Resources

Problem: The development of the creative economy in Indonesia is constrained by the limited quantity and quality of creative actors.

Through this product that I made, I can prove that the Indonesian people have great potential to develop their creativity. Of course, the product that I make is a creative item. Why not? I used the materials that are in the environment to be something beautiful and can help the environment. If Indonesians are said to be not creative, then this mosaic art tote bag idea will not be produced.

2. Capital

Problem: A weak number of financing institutions can provide financing for creative actors and financing for creative industries.

Not only creativity, but this product also proves that to make environmentally friendly products, but you also don't need to use expensive items. I use processed organic and inorganic waste that is very easy to find around us, so we don't have to spend a lot of money to get them. In other words, I use trash to make this product. Therefore, I can conclude that the creative economy doesn't need a lot of capital.

3. Distribution

Problem: Lack of innovation encourages consumers to get their products.

In this modern era, everything can be made easy via the internet, especially social media. By carrying out advertisements and promos on e-commerce applications with a specific mission to develop sales of this product. The goals are, to buy tote bags with promos consumers who buy must promote the product by spreading the benefits of this product on their social media (reviews), share our social media accounts to at least five people, and use tote bags frequently.

Besides, we can reject it by selling it to shops that generally use plastic bags. We can offer collaboration where we hold promos/bonuses to consumers, which gain profit for everyone. Therefore, distribution is no longer a big problem because of this strategy we can encourage people to buy our products.

The market segmentation:

Based on Geography:

  • I will sell this mosaic art tote bag in Manado, of course, by implementing the planned strategies.
Based on Demographics:
  • This product does not consider age, gender, or occupation because people often use single-use plastics. However, if you look back, this product will be more useful for school children (10 years) up to 50 years old, who often do activities. Many people in the city of Manado do activities outside the home. Therefore, this product can develop well based on demographic conditions.

Based on Psychography:
  • This product is considered good by the community because it supports environmental friendliness. Even though there is still no high self-awareness about minimizing the use of plastics, the product still has opportunities to develop. Manado people who like to try new things will be interested in practicing the use of this tote bag, plus an affordable price.

The environment, which is increasingly polluted by plastic waste, must be a factor in the loss of the welfare of the Indonesian people. Seeing the current environmental conditions, this tote bag can be an alternative and a solution to the excessive use of single-use plastics. If this product has been used by many people and becomes popular, then many will be influenced and apply the same thing. Many people like to follow trends that are heating up. Of course, this will also affect plastic producers or other communities to produce cheap tote bags for their livelihood. The more people affected, the less disposable waste is used. That way, the environment can continue to improve and make the Indonesian people safe and prosperous.

Biblical Christian Worldview

The Creation

God created man for the first time to maintain the garden of Eden. Humans are allowed by God to enjoy God's beautiful works and creations. God himself wants us not to ignore His creation but to cultivate it well, as said in Genesis 2:15. God has also commanded us in Genesis 1: 28 to be responsible for all creatures on earth and nature around us. Therefore, everyone should be aware as the keepers of God's creation by guarding and caring for the world properly.

If we can practice eco-friendly living, we can change the environment to be better. This is our concrete action to our seriousness in protecting the environment, as God did during His creation. God has created a good living environment since the time of creation, so we must take good care of it seriously. Also, we need to have a responsible attitude to protect the environment. The responsibility in carrying out our life goals, namely enjoying life and glorifying God's name. God, Himself has shown a responsible attitude; by carrying out a gradual process of creation. By building these two characters, we can have the divine character given by Christ to overcome environmental and universal problems.
